Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub on Tuesday announced the expansion of Ben’s Campaign — Lock it Up. The program was named after a 2-year-old Milford boy who accidentally shot and killed himself with his father’s unsecured handgun in 2016. The campaign distributes free cable-style gun locks that officials say will help prevent similar tragedies. Benjamin Austin Smith was only 2 years old when he accidentally shot himself with his father’s unsecured .45-caliber handgun nearly three years ago. Authorities have called the tragedy senseless and avoidable, and to that end, kick-started efforts to ensure Ben’s death would not be in vain. Since 2017, his name has been invoked to help prevent similar tragedies involving children by distributing free cable-style gun locks through Ben’s Campaign — Lock it Up.
