G Suite vs. Office 365: What’s the best office suite for business?

Once upon a time, Microsoft Office ruled the business world. By the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Microsoft’s office suite had brushed aside rivals such as WordPerfect Office and Lotus SmartSuite, and there was no competition on the horizon. Then in 2006 Google came along with Google Docs & Spreadsheets, a collaborative online word processing and spreadsheet duo that was combined with other business services to form the Google Apps suite, later rebranded as G Suite. Although Google’s productivity suite didn’t immediately take the business world by storm, over time it has gained both in features and in popularity, now boasting more than 5 million paying customers. Microsoft, meanwhile, has shifted its emphasis away from its traditional licensed Office software to Office 365, a subscription-based version that’s treated more like a service, with frequent updates and new features. Office 365 is what we’ve focused on in this story. G Suite and Office 365 have much in common. Both are subscription-based, charging businesses per-person fees every month, in varying tiers, depending on the capabilities their customers are looking for. Although G Suite is web-based, it has the capability...

While unfilled space within a home might feel like a luxury, double-height voids and raked ceilings

While unfilled space within a home might feel like a luxury, double-height voids and raked ceilings have become increasingly popular in today’s residential builds. Having featured numerous builds by Oswald Homes with expansive ceilings, New Homes reached out to the company’s design manager to discuss how ceilings can influence a home’s sense of space. “Raked, coffered, curved, vaulted, barrel and dome ceilings feature various architectural elements, which add volume and detailing to a home,” Oswald Homes Design Manager Brook Leber said. “By articulating and raising the flat facade of a ceiling, it allows a greater sense of drama and acoustic benefits.” Mr Leber said when it came to selecting a feature ceiling design it really depended on the style and aesthetic of the home. Discussing the raked ceilings at The Whitsunday display in Applecross, Mr Leber said the expansive raked ceiling complemented the coastal style associated with luxury retreats in Hawaii and the Caribbean. “The Whitsunday featured a raked cathedral ceiling that ran through the living room out into the alfresco area via a gable window,” he said. “This accentuated the desired indoor-outdoor connection.” Grace’s...

Slow fashion: how to keep your favourite clothes for ever

Extending the life of your wardrobe is good for the planet and your finances. Experts give their tips on how to make your outfits last as long as possible Unless you plan to wear a suit of armour for the rest of your life, there is no way to make your clothes last for ever. You can get close to for ever – if you are prepared to darn. As a society, though, we have become less inclined to make do and mend because the advent of fast fashion has made clothes so affordable that there is no incentive to repair them. In addition, the acceleration of trends – where once there were just two seasons, autumn/winter and spring/summer, now there are also resort, cruise and pre-fall collections – means consumers are continually enticed to buy new things. It is estimated that, in the UK, the average lifetime for an item of clothing is 2.2 years. Extending the lifespan of our clothes isn’t just good for our finances, but also benefits the environment: the fashion industry is a major global polluter and human rights abuses are rife in the garment industries of developing nations. Not so long ago, people learned basic sewing skills. The chances are that, if you ask an older friend or relative, th...

In practical situations and under time constraints, it is easy to lose sight of why we carry out specific tests on RCDs and under what conditions those tests may or may not be relevant. Understanding the basics of the subject, enables us to make reasoned decisions, when faced with an unfamiliar situation, application or an apparent problem.  Before commencing RCD Testing for an installation, make a clear differentiation between earth leakage current, that is current that flows mainly to earth via the protective earth conductor (PE)  and residual fault current that flows to earth via a fault path e.g. person, damaged insulation, water, conductive dust, detergent. BS 7671 (Regs) and IET Codes of Practice (CoP) refer to – Functional Testing i.e. checking the operation of the device under conditions based on the leakage current that will be present during normal operation  and Verification Tests i.e. checking the operation of the device under simulated fault conditions. The Tests performed should be appropriate for the installation / application. All electrical circuits leak current due to natural (parasitic) capacitance between live conductors and earth and any capacitors contained...

More and more photographers are picking up mirrorles systems as either their main system or as

More and more photographers are picking up mirrorles systems as either their main system or as backups to their main gear. Either way, if you pick up a mirrorless camera, you are going to need a bag to carry your new gear. Yes, you could utilze the same big and bulkly bags that you use to lug around your big DSLR but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a small mirrorless kit. Not surprisingly, the bag manufacturers have been more than happy to expand their offerings by making smaller bags to accommodate the new onslaught of mirrorless camera systems. One not so new bag that looks like it could be a winner in the mirrorless market is the Domke F-803 Ruggedwear bag. Is this the holy grail of bags for mirrorless shooters? Let’s find out. Once you get a hold of this bag, you can tell that it was designed by an actual photographer with functionality in mind. The bag is surprisingly light and it is very slim so it doesn’t protrude from your body and get in the way while shooting. There are four external pockets, two small zippered pockets on the main flap and two large Velcro pockets on the front of the bag under the main flap. These pockets are great for storing the equipment ...

Temps nearly steady in the mid 30s. Winds NE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precip 70%. Snow accumulations less than one inch.. Light snow this evening will transition to snow showers late. Low 27F. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 70%. 1 to 3 inches of snow expected. ANGOLA — The Steuben County Highway Department is spending less money this winter season on things like overtime — and possibly materials — due to a lack of snow. And that’s probably a good thing seeing that legislation enacted in 2018 has severely restricted how local highway departments can spend money toward normal operations and maintenance. “There’s certain uses for certain dollars,” said Jen Sharkey, Steuben County Highway Department engineer. Because winter operations come out of unrestricted funds, which have been reduced due to action by the Legislature and approved by Gov. Eric Holcomb, those dollars have been reduced — to the tune of about $970,000 in Steuben County. This year has been easier to manage, but the reduced...

The official Dota 2 account on Twitter announced today that the developers have banned over 40,000

The official Dota 2 account on Twitter announced today that the developers have banned over 40,000 players for “abusing matchmaking,” but it’s still not clear what exactly that means. Kotaku has reached out to Valve for more context on what led to this massive wave of bannings and has yet to hear back. Dota 2, like many online games, is open to potential exploitations of its ranked matchmaking systems. These include ethically dubious activities with whimsical names like “smurfing” and “boosting,” both of which remain hot topic issues within the Dota 2 community due to the ways they can throw the balance of online matches into wack. Smurfed accounts are new accounts opened by active players who can then be matched with inexperienced players and, ostensibly, score easy wins. Boosting refers to the practice by which an account is raised to a higher rank by a third party, such as if a player hires someone else to play for them. Since ranked Dota 2 matches are only accessible after spending 100 hours playing online, one can see why someone might want to take the easy way out by simply purchasing a smurfed account or paying a third party to boost them. This isn’t the first time Valve ...
