The fashion editor’s guide to buying  knee-high boots, for every occasion The Telegraph Search Icon Save Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon

There’s a point every January when I, a devoted wearer of dresses, wonder why I can’t just fall for a nice pair of woollen trousers. Wearing dresses year-round requires a willingness to wrestle with tights for months on end. That or, as I’ve now determined, you need a ready supply of my new favourite footwear: knee-high boots. There are so many points in their favour. Boots are warm, insulating ankles and shins most effectively. They protect legs from icy-puddle splashes. They offer an easy way to introduce colour. And did I mention how cosy mine are? They’re also fashionable – Celine designer Hedi Slimane ensured that. Find a pair in any colour but black, with a heel, and wear them with a swingy A-line skirt, tweed culottes or a bias-cut dress, as I have here. Just ensure the hem is long enough to cover exposed skin. Take a tonal approach by wearing just one colour, as seen in Eva Chen’s caramel outfit at Paris Fashion Week. Gabriela dress, £302, Masscob; Roseton midi skirt, £190, Mes Demoiselles at Matches Fashion; Long socks, £18, Pantherella at Alex Eagle; Check structured blazer, £80, Mango; Portrait II earrings, £56 for one, Kara Yoo For more news, analysis and advice fro...

Don’t preheat the oven, and 24 other ways to save the planet from home Group

1. Let there be more efficient light Lighting accounts for more than 10 per cent of most people’s electricity bills and that cost could be reduced by as much as 80 per cent by switching from halogen light bulbs to energy efficient LEDs. In simple terms, the saving per bulb replaced could be around €7 a year. Add to that the fact that LED bulbs last around 10 times as long – 20,000 hours – as the halogen equivalent and it’s a real no brainer both environmentally and financially. And if you want to make even more savings, put your lights on timers to ensure they are only on when needed. 2. Think before you dry Tumble driers drink electricity at the same time as removing moisture from your clothes. Typical machines use about 3,000 watts of electricity and even the most energy efficient cost about 30 cent per wash to run. Older and less efficient models can cost more than twice that. The best way to save electricity, of course, is to put the clothes on the line outside. You can always hang them up on a clothes drier indoors as well, if you have the space and the patience. If you must use the drier, for time or other reasons, make sure you clean out the filter after each use and don’...

Mom has allergic reaction to her Christmas tree New York Post Page Six Page Six Style Decider

A not-so-lovely reaction known as “Christmas tree syndrome” is making the holidays miserable for sufferers such as Niki Waldegrave, who was left with a painful skin rash after helping strap her family’s first natural Christmas tree to the roof of their car last week. The journalist from Sydney, Australia, was devastated at becoming a likely victim of the condition, which can be a nasty consequence of this time of year, New York City dermatologist Dr. Doris Day tells The Post. “People need to be aware of the risk because Christmas is not so merry if you have a tree allergy,” she says. Symptoms include hives, rashes, wheezing, coughing, sore eyes and potentially serious asthma attacks. Waldegrave, for her part, was left with bleeding blisters on her arms and hands after handling the pine that she purchased at a supermarket. “It was one of the worst feelings I’ve experienced in my life,” Waldegrave tells The Post following her unexpected visit to the hospital. The 39-year-old was shocked by the allergic reaction that happened last week after she picked out a 7-foot fir with her husband, Steven, and their 6-year-old son, Ernie. “We’d just put the tree on the top of the car and my ar...

The Vaping Daily Ultimate Guide to Vape Wires and Vape Coils

You won’t be tapping in the dark like so many other beginner builders and your first coil will be right as rain and ready to fire. At one point or another, a serious vaper will try a hand at building their own coils – out of economic reasons, engineering prowess, or just pure fun. Coil building falls mostly within the purview of e-liquid vaporizers, as dry herb vaporizers and dab wax pens use a different form of heating element and do not get typically built or rebuilt by their users. It is not unheard of, however, for people to create or build and rebuild their own wax atomizers for many of the same reasons we’ve just listed. When that time comes for you, all you’ll need to do is pull up this post (because you’ve bookmarked it, right?) and you will have everything you need to start in one place: types of vape wires, countless coil builds, how to make your first vape coils, how to wick a coil, and so on. You won’t be tapping in the dark like so many other beginner builders and your first coil will be right as rain and ready to fire. The first thing we need to discuss is vape wire. Both the type of the wire and the size matter a lot because of three reasons – flavor, vapor produc...

Drawbacks Of Laser Cut Delrin–and How To Slip Around Them

Welcome back to part II in this ensemble of techniques with laser-cut Delrin. Thanks for many of the great insights along the way in the comments. In this guide, I’d like to go over some of the more immediate kinks that come to mind when getting started with this material. When it comes to shopping, there are a variety of suppliers to choose from, but there are a few key words and thoughts to keep in mind. First, Delrin, is the “brand name” that refers to the Acetal homopolymer. Variants may also be labeled, acetal or acetal homopolymer. Delrin’s natural color is a soft white, but dyes can take it into a range of other colors. Black and white are, by far, the most common, though. In the previous guide, all of the examples were cut from a small range of sheet thicknesses (0.0625[in], 0.09375[in], and .125[in]) sourced from OnlineMetals. As the thickness of the sheet increases, the tolerances on the thickness rating will also become more loose. You might buy a .125[in] plate and find it to be .124[in] in some places and .126[in] in others. If you purchase a .250[in] sheet, however, you’ll find that it may vary as much as .126[in] oversize though! Despite McMaster-Carr being my go-...
