A little over a year ago, NVM Express ratified the NVMe over TCP transport binding specification

A little over a year ago, NVM Express ratified the NVMe over TCP transport binding specification and made it publicly available. Joining existing NVMe transports — PCIe, remote direct memory access and Fibre Chanel — NVMe/TCP defines the mapping of NVMe queues, NVMe-oF capsules and data delivery over TCP. As NVMe/TCP works its way into the storage mainstream, it’s a good time to take a close look at the specification, particularly as it relates to edge storage. Storage is an essential building block when designing the edge infrastructure for edge cloud computing given all the data from the billions of IoT devices. Choosing the best storage solution for edge cloud requires meeting edge-specific requirements. “NVMe/TCP storage solutions are designed for edge cloud infrastructure and optimally serve the needs of the edge and enable organizations to fully benefit from the potential of the edge infrastructure,” said Muli Ben-Yehuda, co-founder and chief scientist at Lightbits Labs Inc. Lightbits uses NVMe/TCP as a base for transforming hyperscale cloud computing infrastructures from relying on a collection of direct-attached SSDs to a remote low-latency ...

Best women’s activewear brands you can wear outside of the gym

The endless debate on leggings as appropriate attire for outside of the gym continues. While some feel there’s a time and a place for activewear, many prefer the comforting second skin that makes airport travel, running errands or brunch dates all the more pleasant.  There is a strong argument to be made for clothes that transcend fashion categories as we become increasingly mindful of consumerism and its impact on the environment. Making smart purchases has never been more crucial and doing so means avoiding wasteful fast-fashion buys that end up in the bin after only a few wears. Not to mention how expensive activewear can be. To get the most out of your investments, we’ve rounded up sleek fitness apparel that will take you straight from the office to the gym with the help of clever styling. Plus, feeling good in your workout kit gives you that added motivation to exercise.  Your coworkers will be none the wiser when you arrive to the meeting in Vaara’s long sleeve bodysuit with roll-neck, tucked into trousers or a pencil skirt. When it’s time to head to pilates, simply swap your bottoms for leggings. Added bonus, the high neck wards off the office’s arctic air conditioning. ...

Earth Fare Boosts In-Store Café Food Sales With Digital Signage

Organic and natural food retailer Earth Fare has joined forces with in-store media solutions company Mood Media on a test of multiple custom-designed digital signage display options and strategies within the café of an Earth Fare store in Charlotte, N.C., which led to a 10% increase in the café’s “eat-in” food category sales. Part of a full renovation of the store, the test took place in mid-2019. At the beginning of the test, Earth Fare developed creative digital media content to be displayed on five 55-inch ultra-high-definition LCD screens, provided and installed by Mood Media. Among the other digital signage strategies rolled out in the test store’s café area were digital menu boards for beverage and eat-in food purchases at the point of sale; branded Earth Fare content driving eat-in food options and targeted messaging; the ability to air live sports, specifically March Madness basketball games; displays of current and upcoming weather conditions at that location; and easily changeable content streams at each of the café’s five screens. “In addition to our commitment to provide clean and healthy food options for our shoppers, we are also dedicated to ensuring that our shopp...

Not long ago, we wrote about how roller-blading is back — but that’s not the only fun way to pass the time with wheels strapped to your feet. Roller-skating — which first became popular in the ’70s, about two decades earlier than roller-blading — has also glided back into popular culture of late, thanks to shows like Euphoria, in which Zendaya & Co. tie on some pairs of old-fashioned skates and hit their local rink. But even though roller-skating predates roller-blading, there are lots of new roller-skate brands on the market, making new styles of the Technicolor wheeled footwear of your childhood dreams for all experience levels and budgets. Of course, if you’re thinking about investing in a new pair of skates, there are things to look out for aside from rad colorways. The size and feel of the wheels, the material of the boot, and the type of hardware used will all affect the skates’ durability and maneuverability, according to the professional roller skaters we spoke with. As a general rule of thumb, leather boots will last longer and fit more co...

Hazardous Fluoride Detected in Drinking Water Using Synthetic Biology

Northwestern University synthetic biologists developed a simple, inexpensive new test that can detect dangerous levels of fluoride in drinking water.Costing just pennies to make, the system only needs a drip and a flick: drip a tiny water droplet into a prepared test tube, flick the tube once to mix it and wait. If the water turns yellow, then an excessive amount of fluoride — exceeding the EPA’s most stringent regulatory standards — is present. This method is starkly different from current tests, which cost hundreds of dollars and often require scientific expertise to use.The researchers tested the system both in the laboratory at Northwestern and in the field in Costa Rica, where fluoride is naturally abundant near the Irazu volcano. When consumed in high amounts over long periods of time, fluoride can cause skeletal fluorosis, a painful condition that hardens bones and joints.Americans tend to think of the health benefits of small doses of fluoride that strengthen teeth. But elsewhere in the world, specifically across parts of Africa, Asia and Central America, fluoride naturally occurs at levels that are dangerous to consume.“In the United States, we hear about fluoride all th...

At least, that’s the idea most automakers are banking on. Elon Musk and Tesla have shown off the immense potential for battery electric vehicles (also known as BEVs), delivering models that offer prodigious range equal to gas-powered equivalents and “ludicrous” acceleration that exceeds most internal-combustion cars. The biggest hurdle for automakers looking to build new EVs is battery technology; power storage units remain heavy, cumbersome and expensive compared with gasoline. So far, battery limitations have been one of the main constraints what types of BEVs can be made, who can afford them, and how much — if any — profit automakers can make from them. But that’s starting to change. The 2020 model year should be a tipping point for EVs, with...

Whether a retailer is operating a traditional service station, a convenience store with a six-island forecourt

Whether a retailer is operating a traditional service station, a convenience store with a six-island forecourt or a truck stop with 10 to 20 diesel-fueling lanes, the goal is the same: ensure drivers are able to get fuel into their tanks quickly, reliably and safely. This objective requires an underground fueling system that will perform without fail. Ensuring that performance can be tricky, however, since a great many of the fueling system’s components are buried out of sight. Common problems associated with buried fueling systems were greatly alleviated a decade ago with OPW’s creation of the FlexWorks Loop System. The genius behind the Loop System was that it was the industry’s first completely integrated, environmentally secure “plug-and-play” underground fuel-delivery system. The system’s true innovation was that it employed pre-fabricated, factory-assembled components that drastically reduced the amount of field labor that was required to install it, while simultaneously lowering the risk that installation errors would occur. The success of the Loop System is illustrated in the hundreds of installations that have been successfully completed since its introduction about 10 ...

Women are zapping their faces with radio waves instead of plastic surgery New York Post Page Six Page Six Style Decider

Remodeling: It isn’t just for ’90s-era kitchens anymore. By harnessing the power of radio frequency and ultrasound technology, skin experts are zapping below the epidermal surface, “remodeling” tissue to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. The process results, they claim, in tighter, more youthful looking jawlines and necks. The best part (at least according to fans)? Because the procedures are noninvasive, there’s little to no downtime. Both techniques use energy — a k a heat — to smooth fine lines and firm contours. They’re also deployed to de-jiggle pudgy bellies and wobbly thighs, and soften creasing in the décolletage area. There are three main types of radio-frequency (RF) treatments: monopolar, bipolar and multipolar. They differ by the degree of skin penetration, and practitioners choose a system based on the body part and intensity of repair. Mono dives deepest — up to 20 millimeters below the epidermis. (Back in 2010, Demi Moore was rumored to be spending a whopping $150,000 per year on Thermage, the best-known monopolar treatment.) Bipolar options, like VelaShape, perform their magic in the 2-to-4 millimeter range. And new multipolar treatments, such as ...

It isn’t only the probiotics, but the way they are produced and the food we eat

It isn’t only the probiotics, but the way they are produced and the food we eat them with that are important for our health Probiotics are gaining popularity around the world and demand for probiotic food products and supplements is increasing. Supermarkets, health food stores and pharmacies are full of different types of products claimed to have beneficial probiotic effects. Advocates recommend that we need to take them regularly, but in which form should you be taking them and how many of them are actually needed for our health to maximise their beneficial effects? Probiotics are live microorganisms that deliver health benefits for the consumer. Beneficial microorganisms have been consumed by humans to improve health for thousands of years, mainly in the form of fermented foods. In the early 1900s Elie Metchnikoff, a Nobel Laureate in Medicine, first introduced the concept of probiotics as it is known today. They are mostly bacteria, but some fungi are also known to have health benefits and are found in foods like yoghurt, kefir (a fermented dairy drink), sauerkraut and tempeh. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are the most widely used probiotic bacteria in the food and nutrace...
