Figure Out How Many Lights Your Christmas Tree Needs

In most everyone’s attic or storage space lurks a box. Inside this box is a ball of impenetrably knotted strings of LED Christmas tree lights, the green electrical cords folding in on themselves. Even after untangling it, you still might find you have too few strings for your tree, or possibly way too many. According to Real Simple, there’s an easy way to calculate how much string lighting is needed for any size Christmas tree. You’ll get a bright, colorful look by adding one strand per foot of tree. (Bulb count can vary by brand, but many strands have around 150 lights.) If you have a typical 6-foot tree, you’d want six strands for coverage, with two additional strands on standby to fill any gaps. If you prefer a tree that’s more densely populated with light, you don’t necessarily need to add more strands—just buy some with more bulbs per strand. To decorate a tree, start the first strand nearest a wall outlet and encircle the trunk. You can secure lights on lighter branches with floral wire. After the holidays, you can use twist ties to store the lights in some semblance of order. That way, you’ll always have the right amount of lighting—tangle-free. In New England, it’s...

The sustainable innovation from Gdynia Design Days 2019

Perched on the bracing Baltic, the 250,000-strong town is in its 12th year of hosting its eponymous Gdynia Design Days. The festival is ‘more about inspiration than showing off commercial products’, says the event’s artistic director, Paulina Kisiel. This year’s theme, ‘polarisation’, tried to tackle the conflicts in modern life, such as those between consumerism and minimalism. Issues of sustainability ran through many of the exhibitions, with curator Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka referencing the new Polish law that enforces the separation of rubbish. Her show ‘(No) More Waste’ featured Diederik Schneemann’s vase made of discarded flip-flops, which have a strong visual story of their own; and pleasing glassware that has been merely sanded down rather than recycled by Polish designers Agata Matlak-Lutyk and Jan Lutyk. By reusing materials from former exhibition stands to make its own display units,...

Blood pressure medications: Types, side effects, and risks

Medications for high blood pressure are vital for helping to prevent a range of complications, including heart disease and stroke. This article outlines the various blood pressure medications along with their associated side effects and risks. Excess salt can cause a buildup of fluid within the blood vessels, which raises blood pressure. Diuretics help the body eliminate excess salt and water by increasing urine output. Some medications can interact with diuretics, so a person should speak to a doctor about all of the drugs they are taking. Drugs that may interact with diuretics include: Diuretics may not be suitable for people who tend to become dehydrated quickly. They can also make the following conditions worse: Beta-blockers reduce blood pressure by blocking the effects of certain stress hormones, such as epinephrine. Blocking these hormones slows down the nerve impulses traveling through the heart. As a result, the heart rate slows down and pumps blood less forcefully around the body. ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) is an enzyme that causes the body’s blood vessels to narrow, which leads to an increase in a person’s blood pressure. ACE inhibitors lower blo...

For centuries, floral, fruity perfumes have been considered ‘feminine’ while spicy, woody scents have been labelled

For centuries, floral, fruity perfumes have been considered ‘feminine’ while spicy, woody scents have been labelled ‘for men’. But those days of limiting gendered marketing are coming to an end. More and more fragrance brands are jumping on the gender-neutral bandwagon, either removing gender from their promotional materials entirely or pointedly selling themselves as unisex. This summer, Liberty London reported a 40 per cent rise in androgynous perfume sales online and in store. This is welcome news because nice smells have universal appeal. Modern buyers are hunting for scents that suit their personalities. Neutral options are trickling into the market, too – those crisp, clean, soapy scents that are neither traditionally ‘feminine’ nor ‘masculine’. These make excellent choices for men and women who don’t quite feel brave enough to buy a fragrance they’d previously associated with the opposite gender to that with which they identify. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you buying one of the many perfumes still labelled ‘Her’ or ‘Pour Homme’, but we appreciate that doing so requires more confidence, so have stuck to non-gendered scents in stylish, minimalist bottles for this r...

When they start singing about favorite things, I always want to add “mechanical keyboards” somewhere in there. The tactile feel of the keys, the efficient clickity-clack, and the brilliant LED backlighting all combine to create devices that I’m thrilled to use, day-in, day-out.  But figuring out what to gift can be intimidating for someone who doesn’t know their purple optical switch from their Cherry MX. So here are some quick and easy choices that are sure to keep you happy this season.  The Das Keyboard 5Q is one of the best mechanical keyboards I’ve ever had the pleasure to review. The Gamma Zulu switches are a dream to type with and are rated as one of the longest-lasting of any switch on the market today. They’re clicky without being obnoxious. Foreign tire makers lead U.S. production expansion AN-LOGO-BLUE AN-LOGO-BLUE

Above: Giti Tire USA in Richburg, S.C.; Below:  Nokian Tyres in Dayton, Tenn. and Hankook Tire America in Clarksville, Tenn. are among tire makers that have committed to U.S. factory projects totaling $3.28 billion in the past three years. Next year, Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian Tyres plans to begin production at its first U.S. plant, in Dayton, Tenn. When the $360 million project is up and running, it will have capacity of 4 million tires a year. Nokian is part of a wave of tire industry capacity expansion in North America in recent years, much of it from foreign producers opening their first U.S. factories. Six foreign tire makers have committed to projects totaling $3.28 billion in the past three years. The tire business and the new-vehicle market are different, but U.S. tire demand reflects consumer enthusiasm for motor vehicles, and tire suppliers see opportunity in a relatively flat and mature market. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association reported a 2.7 percent increase in 2018 original equipment and aftermarket U.S. tire sales to 325.2 million units. Marisa Lifschutz, a lead industry analyst at research firm IBISWorld, points to raw material costs as one driver of n...

Many residents are buying generators to get through PG&E outages. Here’s what you need to know

In some parts of the Bay Area, just about every house on the block has fired one up recently: a thrumming portable generator with enough wattage to keep a refrigerator running, charge a few phones and sustain an internet router. It’s the latest makeshift response to climate-driven disaster, as Pacific Gas & Electric Co. cuts off power to millions of Northern California residents in hopes of keeping wildfires in check. People in blackout zones rushed to buy the devices, swarming hardware stores and pulling every last machine off shelves. “You’re not going to find any generators in the greater Bay Area,” Thomas Apley, manager of Cole Hardware in San Francisco’s Cole Valley neighborhood, said during the latest outages. He said he called several suppliers, “and the closest (generator) I found was in Visalia.” The heightened demand for home generators is another sign of California’s times: wildfires that rage every autumn, sprawling blackouts by PG&E, sporadic tremors with threats of a major earthquake looming. But few consumers know how to buy or use this equipment. Undoubtedly, you have questions. We spoke with several generator experts about what type of machine to purcha...

Beelink launches AP34 mini PC with 8GB RAM, 64GB storage, Apollo Lake CPU

Chinese computer maker Beelink has been offering mini PCs for a few years, and unsurprisingly the specs keep getting better and better. The company’s latest is one of the first tiny desktop computers I’ve seen to ship with 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The new Beelink AP34 model also features an Intel Celeron N3450 quad-core Apollo Lake processor. It’s available from Amazon for $250, but the 8GB Beelink AP34 is also going for as little as $167 at AliExpress. Update: Looks like $217 might be a more realistic price at AliExpress. It’s unclear whether the product description of the $167 model is accurate. It’s worth noting that the product descriptions on both sites state that the computer comes with Windows 10 pre-installed… but on Amazon it’s described as “an official copy of Windows,” while the AliExpress listings make no such claims. That’s probably not an issue if you plan to install a different operating system though. The computer features 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4,.0, and Gigabit Ethernet and supports 4K output through an HDMI 1.4 port. There are three USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Black Friday is still a week away, but Amazon has gone ahe...
