Like games, geese are notoriously annoying. They’re brusque, clumsy, and territorial. If you are a person

Like games, geese are notoriously annoying. They’re brusque, clumsy, and territorial. If you are a person and one appears on your country estate, the advice recommends avoiding engagement and then standing your ground if it charges. Show the goose who’s boss. A recent, hugely popular video game, Untitled Goose Game, stages this conflict. For some reason, it turns out to be familiar to everyone, even city slickers who have never seen a goose in person. It’s fun! Being a goose for a while is diverting and surprising, and embodying one in a simulated, pastoral environment speaks to the flexible power of games as a medium. Games turn the world on its head, allowing you to become all the things you are not: a criminal, in Grand Theft Auto; an explorer of alien worlds, in No Man’s Sky; the universe itself, in Everything. You gain a new perspective, having had the opportunity to be something grander than—or just different from—yourself. The only problem is that you have to play the game to do so. And playing a game is a chore. That’s the big problem with video games: To enjoy them, you have to play them. And playing them requires exerting the effort to operate them. Games are machines,...

Prince Remembers His Parents’ ‘Soul-Crushing’ Fights in Posthumous Memoir The Beautiful Ones

Prince may have died more than three years ago, but he’s still found a way to connect with his fans. In the new book The Beautiful Ones which was published on Tuesday, Prince reflects back on his amazing journey — including his complicated relationship with his parents. The music legend remembers seeing them fight when he was a child and found it “soul-crushing,” he writes in the pages of his unfinished memoir. “My mother, altho [sic] very loving & nurturing, the outgoing life of the party, sometimes could b very stubborn & completely irrational. No one could reason with my mother when she was in this state,” writes Prince. (The book’s editor, Dan Piepenbring, purposely presents Prince’s writing as he wrote it on the page, including his famous textspeak.) “The sound of Ur parents fighting is chilling when U’re a child. If it happens 2 become physical, it can be soul-crushing,” Prince continues. “One night eye remember hearing them arguing & it got physical. At some point my mother crashed in2 my bedroom and grabbed me. She was crying but managed a smile & said, ‘Tell Ur father 2 b nice 2 me.’ She held me up as a buffer so that he wouldn’t fight with her anymore.”...

Men accused of killing Fla. firefighter-medic stole his shoes, phone and cash

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A Coral Springs firefighter was robbed of his Nike sneakers, smartphone and cash before being gunned down by men who hours earlier had declared, “We are real thugs and we got guns,” according to documents released Monday. Firefighter Christoper Randazzo, 39, was killed about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 19 after leaving Aruba Beach Cafe in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. His body was found outside a hotel a few blocks away on El Mar Drive. An arrest warrant for three men say they stole Randazzo’s iPhone, red Nike sneakers, a knife, car keys and a wallet with $55. Arrested Friday were Torrey Holston, 19 — who officials said was Randazzo’s shooter — and Jose Garcia Romero, 20, and Marco Rico, 32. Before midnight Oct. 18, Lantana police arrived to the two-story Motel 6, 1310 W. Lantana Road, to a man who said his girlfriend had been possibly kidnapped, records show. Four shell casings from a .22-caliber gun were found in front of rooms 162, 163 and 164. Nobody had been hit when shots were fired, but a palm tree in front of room 165 had a hole in it. The man said his girlfriend had called Rico, who was her ex-boyfriend, for a drug deal, arrest documents say. When Rico arrived at t...

How To Hone Your Cylinders At Home With A Flex-Hone

Project Firebolt continues apace, dear readers. This past holiday weekend, Todd and I tore into the old BSA Hornet mill I picked up to do a full inspection and major cleaning. One of the pieces most desperately in need of sprucing up were the cylinders. They were gross and, in their state, completely unusable. I had a plan, though. A clever plan that involved a drill, some oil, and about a thousand tiny silicon carbide balls. You all have heard of the Flex-Hone, right? Made by Brush Research Manufacturing, the Flex-Hone is a super simple, easy-to-use smoothing/deburring/honing tool used to clean up cylinders that need a little cleanup but don’t need to be fully rebored. The tool itself is super simple; just a twist of heavy wire with nylon strands woven into it and abrasive “globules” attached to each nylon strand. You typically use one when doing something simple in your top end like replacing your piston rings. As I alluded to earlier, I used a Flex-Hone to clean out the Beezer’s cylinders, and while I did, I took some pictures to put together this handy how-to reference guide. So, without further ado, let’s get to it. Flex-Hones come in a dizzyin...

Neighborhood Ramen review: Queen Village noodle shop has intent to commit next-level ramen

“Those Fukuoka Hawks are having a helluva season, aren’t they?” the counter guy said cheerfully as he took my order at Neighborhood Ramen, then handed me a tabletop sign with the cartoon image of the Japanese baseball team’s mascot — a goofy, cross-eyed golden bird that looked to be flailing at a screwball. “I actually have no idea, I’m not a sports fan. But that’s what you’re supposed to say, right?” he confessed, as reggae tunes pulsed in the background and the crowd around us leaned in for a deep communal slurp from their black box seats at this Queen Village ramen shop. The exchange was not a bad metaphor for how ramen culture has evolved in Philadelphia — a brothy gush of general enthusiasm for a genre that’s satisfyingly delicious and obsession-worthy, not to mention a great value; but one that’s also been embraced with little real understanding of tradition and what’s going on in those bowls, even as trendy ramen stops proliferate at an unrelenting pace. What makes one cloudy pork brew of tonkotsu broth better than the other? Can you put too much chili spice in the tantan? What’s up with wavy noodles vs. straight ones? Is a “Whopper”-sized bowl always better? The F...

Class A CFRP body panels: Six-minute cure : CompositesWorld

Gurit CBS-based laminate/process combo mints parts with twice the thermal performance in one-sixth the time. Gurit Automotive Ltd.’s (Newport, Isle of Wight, U.K.) CBS 200 ply schedule features a layer of surface film/primer (a), an outer 2×2 twill semipreg layer (b), a flexible syntactic foam core (c) and an inner layer of semipreg, usually 2×2 twill glass (d). Source: Gurit Automotive To complement CBS 200, Gurit developed a new press-based molding process that uses matched-metal dies and relatively low pressure to achieve a 10-minute cycle time, a significant improvement compared to Gurit’s previous vac-bag process, which took a full hour to form and cure parts. Source: Gurit Automotive Because it features semipreg and a flexible syntactic core, the CBS 200 laminate is reportedly more flexible and, therefore, has better drapeability and conformability than most prepreg laminates, so it can better conform to complex tool geometries without dry spots and bridging. The new process is expected by Gurit to produce up to 40,000 parts per year on a single tool set.
