The most beautiful Arts & Crafts homes you can now buy in Wales

This truly unique design is so distinctive that a house boasting influences from this architectural style are instantly recognisable. The Arts & Crafts movement was founded in 1887 and was one of the most influential design groups of recent history. Advocates of the movement included artists, architects and designers who were united in the ideals of individual design and craftsmanship rather than mass machine production. They believed in the principle of art for all people, the revival of gothic design and nostalgia for the medieval age. Most historians agree that the most famous and pioneering Arts & Crafts champion was designer and writer Williams Morris, whose internationally-recognised iconic designs and patterns are still popular and influential today. If you want the most individual house on the street, an original Arts & Crafts home is something to aim for but they are rather rare, so you might have to be flexible on budget and location but definitely not on unique design. What: Perched within the middle of a substantial plot in Newton, this stunning period home still boasts a wealth of Arts & Crafts features, still intact and obviously loved and preserve...

New vaulted glass roof brings sun lit year-round shopping to a Devon town | Pilkington

Project: Market Walk Newton AbbotClient: Teignbridge District CouncilGeneral contractor: Classic BuildersArchitect: LHC GroupGlazing Installer: Vitrine Systems “Weather has had a greater effect on sales than economic numbers, we’ve known that forever”. So said former John Lewis managing director Andy Street, alluding to a longstanding challenge for British retailers – how to keep shoppers coming out on cold, wet and windy days. At one traditional shopping centre at the heart of a Devon town, the solution is architectural – enclosing the previously open-air pedestrianised street with a large glass roof in order to create a space that can be enjoyed all-year-round. Originally built in the 1970s, the Market Walk shopping centre in Newton Abbot, South Devon, was bought by Teignbridge District Council in 2016. The £13 million acquisition of Newton Abbot’s Market Walk shopping centre was the largest investment in Teignbridge‘s history and gave Teignbridge a greater ability to positively influence the future development of Newton Abbot’s central shopping district as well as regular and reliable source of income. Teignbridge later invested £2 million in upgrading the centre and moderni...

VIDEO: Advancing Fiber Laser Cutting with “Zoom” Head Technology > ENGINEERING.com

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> While fiber laser cutting technology is slowly encroaching on CO2 cutting territory, CO2 is still the laser of choice for fixed section and difficult materials. Mitsubishi Electric’s popular CO2 laser, the eX, now has a 6 kW fiber version called the eX-F, which uses an IPG fiber resonator and a unique “Zoom” head. This head can change focal length and beam diameter automatically to adapt to changing laser cutting conditions. ENGINEERING.com had the chance to speak with David Kloos, laser field application manager at MC Machinery about the details. Interview highlights are documented in the video above and the Q&A below. James Anderton (JA): Everyone wants to sell their products on power, but there’s a lot more to laser cutting than just power, isn’t there? David Kloos (DK): It’s all about the head design. Everyone’s got power, but how are you going to get the best value or bang for your buck? So we developed our new zoom head, [the 6 kW eX-F] with which we can control the size of the beam and focus input. This head can do 3.75 focal ...

Skyscraper construction hits pieces of Hudson’s foundation CRAINS-DETROIT-horizontal-red-wht CRAINS-DETROIT-horizontal-red-wht

Workers building what should end up as the state’s tallest skyscraper are drilling into the foundation of what sat before on the site: the J.L. Hudson’s department store downtown, more than two decades after it was imploded and more than a century after it opened. The foundation pieces are breaking drill bit teeth, delaying work a little, but not enough to cause concern. “Hitting obstructions is a very normal part of drilling caissons,” said Joe Guziewicz, vice president of construction for Dan Gilbert’s Detroit-based Bedrock LLC real estate development, management, leasing and ownership company, which is developing the $909 million project. Caissons are part of the foundation that will ultimately support the tower that could rise up to 912 feet in the air, and the so-called “block” — a smaller multiuse building to the north with an activated alley separating the two. Pieces of the old foundation as well as other materials have caused more than 300 hours of what’s known in the industry as delayed obstruction time so far — but that’s common for a large new development in a major downtown environment, Guziewicz said. He declin...

With this mental deception plan put into place last fall, about an hour after picking up

With this mental deception plan put into place last fall, about an hour after picking up the small GS, it was time to start looking at how it could be tailored and enhanced. As I have discovered over the past year there was a growing list of accessories – from BMW , the major accessory suppliers and a whole raft of other players who are taking advantage of the growing ‘adventure touring’ market. Many of the products coming to market for the F650 and F800GS twins show great innovation and simplicity of design, things I really appreciate. Some of the best seen so far for these models are from some of the smallest players and many of them are based here in North America. Since getting the 8GS in early October of 2008 and having now racked up just under 4500kms during the fall and two treks down south, the mental list continues to grow, so some prioritization is required. Some items translate into a hard accessory while others get addressed through a simple adjustment or minor modification to something. So after a few months of ownership, some enjoyable work and an ever-growing outlay of cash, the motorcycle is slowly being tailored and accessorized. Before leaving the dealership t...

Feiplastic ’19: INEOS Styrolution getting permits for US ASA plant

SAO PAULO (ICIS)–INEOS Styrolution is in the midst of securing permits for a new acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) plant that it is building in Bayport, Texas, an executive said on Wednesday. The plant will have an ASA capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year, and it should be on stream by mid-2021, said Alexander Gluck, president, Americas, INEOS Styrolution. He made his comments on the sidelines of the Feiplastic trade show. The plant will allow INEOS Styrolution to dedicate its Mexican swing plant in Altamira, Tamaulipas state to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Gluck said. Right now that plant produces both ASA and ABS at a capacity of 145,000 tonnes/year. Once the projects are completed, ASA and ABS capacity at the two sites will reach 260,000 tonnes/year. INEOS Styrolution is pursuing the projects as demand for the two resins continues to grow. The company expects ASA demand to rise by 4-5% and ABS by 2-3%, Gluck said. ABS and ASA have similar end markets, but ABS is used indoors or in interior applications, while ASA is more typically used outdoors or in exterior applications. In automobiles, ASA is often used in front grills, rear mirrors and other parts in the fr...

Koepka Survives Finale, Clings to PGA Championship – Sports Talk Florida

Farmingdale, NY- When Friday’s second round of the PGA Championship concluded, interest dried up. Tiger Woods missed the cut. Phil Mickelson was on the outside looking in. And Brooks Koepka so effortlessly dominated Bethpage Black over the first two days of the tournament that the Wanamaker Trophy was already in Koepka’s hands again. That feeling held after Saturday when Koepka’s lead held at seven strokes despite an even-par day. Sunday reminded fans to not presume the outcome until every hole is played. Dustin Johnson entered the day -5 and proceeded to remind the crowd of his number one status. He birdied three holes on the front nine to spark some possible concern in the Koepka camp. He stood just four strokes back of Koepka as the leader stayed even through the first nine. Brooks opened the back nine with a birdie to improve his score to -13. Meanwhile, Johnson bogeyed 11 to Some fans left, thinking Koepka was so far ahead with only a few holes left and expecting rain would come down. The clouds indeed thickened, but the rain did not fall, nor did Koepka’s dominance hold. In a shock twist, the normally reliable Koepka bogeyed four consecutive holes. He missed all his drives...

Here’s How to Install a McLeod Super Street Pro Clutch

Clutch technology has always been about getting a grip and getting power from the crankshaft to the rear axle. How to do that successfully has always been the challenge for clutch manufacturers like McLeod, which has been designing and manufacturing clutch systems since it was founded nearly a half-century ago. When you’ve been making clutches for as long as McLeod you come to learn a thing or two about how to develop and engineer them for a wide variety of street and racing applications. The objective is to get a clutch to hook up without slippage and do it consistently for years and years and thousands of miles. As we continue to add to the horsepower and torque burden it becomes tricky to produce a clutch that can stand up to the power we want. This is why we looked to McLeod and their Super Street Pro clutch for our LS application. The McLeod Super Street Pro clutch (PN 75223) for LS applications can take up to 550 horsepower along with comparable torque, which makes it ideal for both the street and track. This SFI-approved clutch and flywheel combo includes a high clamp load pressure plate and a dual-faced organic and metallic clutch disc for smooth engagement and terrific ...
